Functional Rhythm  – VIA Project Assistance grant 2010

The Collection Functional Rhythm by Emilie Colin Garros was presented at imm 2011 at the [D3] Design Talents Contest.

Emilie Colin Garros joined a small company of five persons  specialized in the folding of steel industrial pieces. This was part of her diploma assignment during which she had the opportunity to visit the workshop and observe the whole process from end to end.  The complexity of cutting, the waste of material and the opportunities for innovation motivated the designer to  work on construction in an attempt to rationalize the fabrication process. Emilie Colin Garros decided to work with a single piece of metal, a real challenge for a designer who wants to add volume and movement in an object.

Thanks  to her involvement into the workshop the designer gained valuable experience and knowledge that she used at the moment of  the transformation from 2D to 3D.  The folding process apart from reducing the waste of material added rhythm and plasticity to the project giving this way a strong aesthetic feel.

” It’s important to meet manufacturers because there are real opportunities of innovation by observing processes. It is also essential to put in place a mode of creation based on proximity where the discussion and the transmission of  technical and practical knowledge are easier because everything becomes possible and very human.”
